An intermediate course designed to enhance the speaking and listening skills of non-native English speakers. Emphasis is on pronunciation, stress, rhythm, and intonation patterns of American English. Oral communication, listening comprehension, and vocabulary development are stressed. Students build their skills through instruction and intensive practice.

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to :

• Set oral communication goals for improving pronunciation, grammar, and fluency in American English.
• Recognize and pronounce the sounds of American English, including linked and reduced phrases to increase intelligibility in English.
• Predict stress in words and demonstrate the ability to produce stress appropriately.
• Recognize appropriate patterns of stress, rhythm, and intonation and use these patterns to increase intelligibility in English.
• Display listening comprehension skills commensurate with an intermediate level of English.
• Engage in guided conversation practice applying newly learned communication skills.
• Ascertain the pronunciation of new words using the phonetic codes in the text and in dictionaries.
